York staged the Royal Ascot meeting in June |
Officials at York racecourse have offered to host the Ladbrokes St Leger next year if redevelopment plans at Doncaster go ahead. York is keen to build on its experience of staging the 2005 Royal Ascot meeting in similar circumstances.
Clerk of the course and chief executive William Derby said: "We'd love to be considered if Doncaster is redeveloped.
"We'd love to keep the world's oldest Classic in the county of Yorkshire and that would be fantastic."
Derby added: "We are in discussions, as are others, and we could stage a two-day meeting on a Friday and Saturday in September to accommodate the St Leger."
York's record-breaking 2005 season drew to a close on Saturday.
Reflecting on the year, Derby said: "It was hugely exciting, records broken and memories made, which was a tribute to our staff and to Ascot's.
"Around 480,000 came racing at York this season, including 224,000 for Royal Ascot."
