Dual Oaks and Breeders' Cup winner Ouija Board has been crowned Horse of the Year at the 2004 Cartier Racing Awards. The horse, trained by Ed Dunlop at Newmarket, was also named the top three-year-old filly at a ceremony in London on Wednesday night.
Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Bago won the three-year-old colt honour while James Fanshawe's Soviet Song triumphed in the older horse section.
The Tim Easterby-trained Somnus (top sprinter) was among other prize winners.
Ouija Board was rewarded after winning the English and Irish Oaks, finishing third in the Arc and then taking the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.
The filly faced competition from Soviet Song, Bago, Attraction and Divine Proportions for the Horse Of The Year title.
Elie Lellouche's Westerner fought off stiff competition from Papineau to land the stayer award.
The unbeaten Shamardal led the way among the juvenile colts, with Divine Proportions coming out best in the juvenile fillies.
The Daily Telegraph Award of Merit went to David and Patricia Thompson, owners of Cheveley Park Stud in Newmarket.
Managed by Chris Richardson, the stud has enjoyed high-profile victories with the likes of Russian Rhythm, Medicean, Soar, Red Bloom and Iceman.
