Carte Diamond won the November Stakes at Doncaster as the curtain fell on the 2004 Flat season. Kieren Fallon took the 12-1 shot to the front at the two-furlong pole and held off the challenge of fast-finishing Distant Prospect.
Distant Prospect was ridden by Fallon's great title rival Frankie Dettori, who was officially crowned champion jockey earlier in the afternoon.
Bendarshaan was third under Joe Fanning while Jeepstar came home fourth.
Last year's winner Turbo, who was sent off the 4-1 favourite finished well down the field, thus denying trainer Toby Balding a fairytale finish to his 48-year career.
Winning trainer Brian Ellison, who was successful in the same race in 2000 with Batswing, said his plans for Carte Diamond would now change.
"We were going to run him over hurdles, but I don't think we will now and next year we will train him for the Ebor at York," he said.
