Brave Inca was beaten into second place by Macs Joy on Friday |
Macs Joy edged out another Cheltenham prospect Brave Inca in the big race on the opening day of the Northern Ireland Festival of Racing at Down Royal. Jessica Harrington's 4-7 favourite defeated last season's Cheltenham Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner by a length in the Anglo Irish Bank Hurdle.
Total Enjoyment, ridden by Ruby Walsh, also justified favouritism in the EBF Scarvagh Stud Mares Novice Hurdle.
The 8-11 favourite had over three lengths to spare from Sanghasta.
Total Enjoyment won the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at this year's Cheltenham Festival.
Thomas Cooper's mare was making her hurdling debut in Friday's race.
The favourite travelled prominently all the way, drawing clear two from home and, despite making a slightly sketchy jump at the last, won as he liked by three and a half lengths.
Total Enjoyment is being aimed at the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham and is a 10-1 with some bookmakers.
Brave Inca was conceding weight to all the other horses in the big race of the day.
This year's Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner was a few lengths behind for much of the race but jockey Barry Cash got the six-year-old back on terms with Macs Joy and Barrack Buster two hurdles from home.
However Macs Joy, who was receiving 10lb from Brave Inca, was always travelling cosily under Barry Geraghty and drew away for a smooth one-length success.
The winner, who also took the Swinton Handicap Hurdle at Haydock earlier in the year, was promptly cut by Coral to 14-1 from 20-1 for next year's Smurfit Champion Hurdle.
Brave Inca, whose trainer Colm Murphy had forewarned that he would need the run, remains a 12-1 chance for the big race.
