Henrietta Knight
Henrietta Knight
Born:
15 December 1946
Started training: 1989
Base: Wantage, Oxfordshire
Festival wins: 6
2002-2003 wins: 44
2001-2002 wins: 48
2000-2001 wins: 39
Since taking out her licence in 1989, Knight has built up a stable full of quality horses.

A former biology teacher, Knight's equine career began in the world of eventing.

This has undoubtedly influenced her approach to training, which complements the more hard-headed expertise of her assistant trainer and husband, former champion jockey Terry Biddlecombe.

Knight's first Cheltenham winner came with Karshi, owned by her brother-in-law (and chairman of Cheltenham Racecourse) Lord Vestey.

But much of her success has come from horses owned by Jim Lewis, who made contact after reading an article about her in a magazine.

He has provided her other Cheltenham Festival winners - two coming from the evergreen Edredon Bleu who won the Grand Annual in 1998 and a thrilling Champion Chase in 2000.

The veteran is still running at the top level and astounded everyone by taking the King George VI Chase earlier this season.

But it is Best Mate, who won the King George in 2002, for whom Knight, Biddlecombe and Lewis will be remembered in years to come after completing his hat-trick in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The brilliant chaser has thrust Knight into the spotlight, culminating in her releasing an autobiography at the end of 2003.
