Best Mate won the Gold Cup in 2002 and 2003 |
Dual Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Best Mate may be on the brink of history - but he is not among the public's top 10 favourite racehorses, according to a new poll. The horse would emulate the legendary Arkle with a third title in March.
But he has ranked only 14 in a poll of all-time favourites being carried out by the Racing Post newspaper.
Another surprise ommission from the top 10 is 1981 Derby winner Shergar.
The horse, who won the Epsom Classic by a record 10 lengths, became an even bigger name following his subsequent abduction and death.

Arkle, Desert Orchid and Red Rum are among the leading contenders for the ultimate accolade.
Readers will be invited to vote for their favourite once the most popular 10 are announced.
Just missing out on the final shortlist were Dawn Run (11), See More Business (12) and Mill Reef (13).
