 | Frankie Dettori steers Vintage Tipple to victory |
Vintage Tipple, ridden by Frankie Dettori, was a surprise winner of the Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh. The Italian jockey brought the filly with a storming late run down the straight to deny the Aidan O'Brien-trained pacemaker L'Ancresse by a length.
Epsom Oaks winner Casual Look (7-1) a further half-length back in third.
The 11-8 favourite Yesterday was the more fancied of O'Brien's two runners but, after being settled towards the rear for most of the race, failed to make up sufficient ground and could only manage fourth under Michael Kinane.
L'Ancresse had set the early pace but all of the field looked to be toiling at the two-furlong marker before Vintage Tipple stormed out of the pack.
The three-year-old comes from the stable of Paddy Mullins, who trained the legendary jumping mare Dawn Run, and she is the octogenarian's first Group One winner on the Flat since 1973.
It was also the first Classic victory of his 51-year career.
It was only the second run Vintage Tipple has had this season, having suffered a hairline fracture of a cannon bone in April.
"If she stays lucky, the sky's the limit for her," said Mullins after the race.
Dettori said he was surprised at how comfortably Vintage Tipple had won.
"The further she went, the stronger she got," he said. "When I turned round a furlong out I couldn't believe we would win so easily."
