York racecourse is situated on the famous Knavesmire and is one of the most historic tracks in the country. Organised racing was introduced into the region by the Romans with the first meeting held at the course taking place in 1754.
It is a left-handed, wide track suited to powerful gallopers and is seen as being flat and fair.
York's first meeting of the season is in May where it hosts the Dante Stakes and the Musidora Stakes, which are trials for the Derby and Oaks respectively.
Also run at the same meeting is the Yorkshire Cup, one of the top races of the season for stayers.
But it is the Ebor festival which is the course's main attraction of the year.
Held in August, its highlights include three Group Ones in the shape of the International Stakes, Yorkshire Oaks and the Nunthorpe Stakes, the only G1 five-furlong race in Britain.
The meeting also features other prestigious races, including the Great Voltigeur Stakes, the Lowther Stakes and the Gimcrack Stakes.
