It was Jose Santos' first Kentucky Derby victory

Funny Cide, ridden by Jose Santos, had been beaten by Empire Maker and third-placed Peace Rules on his last two starts, but he gained revenge with a length-and-three-quarter victory.

It was another bitterly disappointing day for Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, who was again denied the one prize he covets as his double entry of Empire Maker and Peace Rules fell just short.

Purchased by six high school friends for just $22,000 (�13,700), Funny Cide collects a winner's purse of $800,200 (�500,000) and gives trainer Barclay Tagg and jockey Santos their first Derby triumphs.

Tagg made Derby history of his own, becoming the first trainer to win his first Derby try since Cam Gambolotti with Spend a Buck in 1985.

"People just didn't believe in this horse because he is a gelding," said Santos, winning his first Derby in his seventh attempt.

"This is an excellent horse. I can't believe we won the Kentucky Derby."

Funny Cide, who went off at odds of 12-1, was third down the backstretch as Brancusi and Peace Rules duelled at the front.

When Brancusi began to tire entering the final turn, Santos moved Funny Cide off the rail to go after Frankel's other colt.

As they turned for home, Funny Cide was between Peace Rules on the inside and Empire Maker on the outside before drawing clear to win.
