Duffield, now into the second half of his 50s, is the oldest jockey riding in Britain. The Yorkshire-born Duffield rode his first winner in 1967 at Yarmouth and since then has ridden almost 2,500 winners, twice notching up more than 100 in a season.
After spending most of his career as something of a journeyman jockey, riding plenty of winners but usually on the less glamorous stages, Duffield hit the headlines with victory in the 1992 Oaks, which he won on User Friendly.
The same filly provided him with a win in the St Leger.
For more than 30 years, Duffield has been stable jockey to Sir Mark Prescott at the Heath House stables, which he first moved to in 1962.
A gritty, no-nonsense Yorkshireman, Duffield released his autobiography in 2002, in which he admitted punching future BHB chairman Peter Savill during a row at Beverley.
Duffield, whose wife Ann is a trainer, was made an MBE in the 2003 New Year's Honours.
