Clare Balding jumped for joy alongside colleague Willie Carson Casual Look wins Oaks

Television viewers saw BBC presenter Clare Balding cry tears of joy as she watched her brother Andrew claim an emotional Classic victory in his first season as a trainer.

Clare, anchoring TV coverage on the opening day of the Derby meeting, tried valiantly to carry out her duties as Casual Look won the Oaks.

But afterwards, she admitted to being very emotional as the filly completed a treble on the day for rider Martin Dwyer.

It was 32 years since Clare and Andrew's father, Ian, had famously triumphed at Epsom in the Derby with the legendary Mill Reef.

Andrew only officially took over the training licence at the family's Kingsclere stable from his father six months ago.

As her mobile phone buzzed with messages of congratulation, Clare told this website how she jumped for joy alongside colleague Willie Carson.

"I was so excited, I hit Willie so hard, he was in real pain," she said.

"I could see the horse was travelling really well, and I was thinking of my brother and saying 'He's going to win the Oaks, he's going to win the Oaks.'"

The cameras panned away at one stage as the presenter gathered her thoughts.

"I was a bit of a loss to my job, but I guess it made great television," she added.

The Oaks win was one of three victories, at combined odds of 700-1, for the trainer.

But Andrew and Ian were both lost for words as Clare asked for their reaction following the big race.

She told viewers: "I'm sorry. The Balding family aren't very communicative at the moment. We'll be back to you in a minute."

Casual Look won by a neck

Later, she had the honour of presenting her brother with the handsome Oaks trophy.

Clare declared to racegoers: "For personal reasons, I'm particularly pleased to welcome up to the stands the winning trainer.

"It is his first runner in the Oaks, and only his second winner in a Classic.

"He's managed to achieve something that his father never did, and he'll be incredibly proud, as I am."

Willie Carson told this website his co-presenter was "very, very excited" during the mile-and-a-half race.

The former champion jockey added: "My back's killing me from being hit, but she had every right to be so happy.

"It's absolutely magic for the family for Andrew to win in his first year since taking their licence over."
