Kevin Darley is one of the few English jockeys at the top of a sport which has become dominated by Irish riders.
The Yorkshire-based Darley has also managed to buck the trend of southern-based jockeys always winning the riders' title.
That champion jockey crown came in the year 2000 when Darley rode 155 winners, taking advantage of title holder Kieren Fallon's injury to strike a blow for the north.
Despite riding seven more winners in 2001, he had to settle for second behind Fallon.
Darley was born in Staffordshire, served his apprenticeship with Reg Hollinshead and rode his first winner, Dust Up, at Haydock on his 17th birthday.
He has clocked up most of his big race victories in recent years, with a French Derby win on Celtic Swing in 1995 among the highlights.
His partnership with trainer Mark Johnston has proved profitable but his biggest win came for another Yorkshire trainer, Tim Easterby.
That was last season when Darley rode Bollin Eric to victory in the St Leger.
