| Tuesday, 19 November, 2002, 16:03 GMT Price hike threat to racecards ![]() Racing fans may have to look elsewhere for racecards Racecards could be dropped from at least one national newspaper this week because of the British Horseracing Board's proposed increases in charges for the data. The Sun omitted the names of race sponsors on Tuesday and are considering leaving out racecards on Thursday. "The increase in charge from 3,000 to 340,000 is ridiculous and something we are certainly not prepared to pay," said The Sun's racing editor Damian Walker. "We have a meeting this evening and we shall decide from there whether we shall drop racecards. "We have been looking at possibly dropping racecards from as soon as Thursday. "We sent a letter to the BHB on 5 November and we have had no reply. "They say that negotiations are still open, but as yet they have not got back to us. The ball is in their court." Walker added that two months ago he had met with Nigel Smith, the commercial managing director of the BHB, who was "prepared to accept" that some newspapers may not be willing to carry racecards. |
