Murphy attended a Jockey Club disciplinary hearing at Portman Square on Wednesday following his remarks on the BBC television programme Kenyon Confronts in June.

In it, Murphy claimed on camera that �1,600 had been made in betting exchanges after one of his horses, Christiansted, was beaten in a race at Fakenham in February.

The West Witton trainer had argued that his comments had been taken out of context.

"I am a little disappointed with the level of the fine. I never had any intention of carrying out what was said on the film," said Murphy.

The BBC documentary, entitled They Fix Races, Don't They?, claimed to expose alleged cheating in racing.

At the Club's request, the Kenyon Confronts production team handed over eight hours of secretly-filmed footage plus written statements ahead of the hearing.

In a statement, the BBC added: "Shortly after the programme was broadcast the Jockey Club itself and Ferdy Murphy tried to discredit the Kenyon Confronts investigation.

"They claimed the programme makers had taken everything out of context and misrepresented what had been filmed.

"This is a complete vindication of the Kenyon Confronts investigation."

Two further hearings, against Jamie Osborne and David Wintle have been postponed, Club officials announced on Tuesday.

Osborne, like Murphy, has been hit by a disrepute charge.

Wintle, meanwhile, also has to answer questions relating to the running of a horse and alleged "violent or improper conduct" towards BBC investigative reporter Paul Kenyon.
