Tillerman clinches victory
Richard Hughes, on Tillerman, moves up to win the Celebration Mile at Goodwood
Tillerman moves up to challenge at the close
Jockey Richard Hughes guided 5-1 shot Tillerman to the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood on Saturday.

But he had an anxious wait after a stewards' inquiry involving his horse and the favourite Where Or When, ridden by Kevin Darley.

Then there was an objection by the favourite's trainer Terry Mills but the result stood.

As expected, Hughes held his horse up until the final furlong and a half when he came through from behind to clinch victory by a neck.

But Hughes' burst of speed, which held up Darley's mount, meant lengthy deliberations in the stewards' room.

It was an excellent victory for the Amanda Perrott-trained horse, who suffered a disappointing narrow defeat in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Redback, ridden by Darryll Holland, had made much of the running early on but after Hughes made his move there was only going to be one winner.

Redback just managed to hang on for second after a photo finish, edging out stablemate Reel Buddy.

Terry Mills, who saw Where Or When eventually finish in a dead-heat for fourth, was furious after the race.

"It's unbelievable," he fumed. "Richard Hughes has held our horse in, anyone with eyes could see it.

"I cannot understand how he can possibly keep the race.

"I knew it was going to be a tactical race with only seven runners - all I wanted was a fair crack.

Kieron Fallon rides First Charter to victory in the San Miguel March Stakes
Kieron Fallon guides First Charter home

"Our horse was flying at the end but we never had a chance - I just feel bad for all the punters who have backed him."

Capricho made up for his disqualification at Newmarket last month when he won the Bun Bun Rated Stakes.

Trainer Jon Akehurst had failed to insert the weight-cloth into his charge's saddle last time around but that was all forgotten as the 7-2 joint-favourite romped home..

First Charter continued the fine recent form of his trainer Sir Michael Stoute as he became a possible contender for the St Leger when galloping away with the San Miguel March Stakes at Goodwood.

The 11-8 favourite, ridden by Kieren Fallon had few problems, winning by a length and a half from Spanish John.
