Millenary takes top honours
Millenary, ridden by Pat Eddery (r) edges out Mubtaker and Richard Hills
Pat Eddery guides Millenary (r) to victory
Millenary brought yet more success for veteran jockey Pat Eddery with victory in the feature race on the first day of the Newmarket July meeting.

The five-year-old relished the early-morning rain to take the Princess of Wales Stakes and complete a double for evergreen rider Pat Eddery.

Forced to switch from the rails as Mubtaker battled for the lead with Yavana's Pace, the 5-2 favourite gradually reeled in the first two from the furlong-pole.

The 2000 St Leger hero passed Mubtaker in the final strides to win by a neck and will now head for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot at the end of the month.

"He does not like fast ground, he needs some ease," said winning trainer John Dunlop.

He is a grand horse and he is only five so hopefully he has got plenty more races left in him
Millenary's trainer John Dunlop

"He had to go quite a long way round but that's the sort of horse he is, he doesn't have a burst of acceleration, he stays well and he wears them down.

"We'll have to run in the King George and hope that the ground is right. Then we'll probably consider the Irish St Leger after that.

"He is a grand horse and he is only five so hopefully he has got plenty more races left in him."

Eddery had earlier triumphed on the 100-30 shot Feet So Fast in the Tote Exacta Rated Stakes.

The Willie Musson-trained son of Pivotal raced on the far side of the track as the field split into two groups.

Richard Quinn guides Spinola to victory
Richard Quinn on Spinola took the Cherry Hinton Stakes

He came flying through the pack to take the lead from a furlong out and win by a length and a half from Fayr Jag.

Trainer Peter Harris landed the Cherry Hinton Stakes for the second time in three years as Richard Quinn guided the 7-1 shot Spinola to victory in the Group Two race.

The 7-1 shot grabbed a gap on the inside rail to lead around two furlongs out and held off the challenge of Cassis, ridden by Darryl Holland, by a short head.

Pearl Dance was a further head back in third.

Harris, who won the same contest with Dora Carrington in 2000, now has a Group One contest in his sights.

"If she continues to progress then the Cheveley Park Stakes is an obvious main objective," he said.
