Hawk Wing captures Eclipse
Hawk Wing leads stablemate Sholokhov home in the Coral Eurobet Eclipse
Hawk Wing beats stablemate Sholokhov
Odds-on favourite Hawk Wing led home another Aidan O'Brien big race one-two in winning the Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

The victory marked a first Group One success for the three-year-old colt who was the runner-up in both the 2,000 Guineas and the Epsom Derby.

The 8-15f was as expected too strong for his four rivals in the 10-furlong contest and now adds his name to the Eclipse roll of honour, which includes Mill Reef, Sadler's Wells, Dancing Brave, Daylami and Giant's Causeway.

Pacemaker Sholokhov, who was a 200-1 runner-up in last week's Irish Derby, again held on for second place, Paul Scallon's mount this time edging out Godolphin challenger Equerry.

It was a workmanlike rather than spectacular performance as Mick Kinane guided Hawk Wing to the front coming into the final furlong.

Once there, Hawk Wing was never threatened and coasted home to a 2-length victory.

He earns 188,500 for the win but that figured will be dwarfed by the value that a Group One victory will add to his stud value.

Kinane was delighted with Hawk Wing's effort and believes that on a firmer surface, there could be more to come.

"He has great pace - I was seriously worried about this going but it was important to get this horse back to where he belongs and that is at the top," he said.

"I really believe that you haven't seen the best of him. On a good to firm surface you will see an exceptional colt."

He is a very special horse and it's great to see him win
Aidan O'Brien

Trainer O'Brien admitted that it was a relief to see High Wing claim a big race victory at the third time of asking.

"He had a hard race in the Derby and we were worried about him but he is a very special horse, a unique kind of horse," said the Irishman.

"Usually a horse with that kind of class and speed wouldn't get a trip like a mile and a quarter.

"He is a great specimen with a great temperament. He has great presence, the way he's put together, the way he carries his head. He travels. He quickens.

"He is a very special horse and it's great to see him win. It's a relief."

O'Brien added that the horse's next target could be either the King George and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot or the Juddmonte Stakes at York.

"Obviously he could go to Ascot if he wants or he could have a rest and go to York," O'Brien explained.

"All his options are open. America (Breeders' Cup) is a long way away but if he is still showing us that he is well then he could go there."
