Gossamer shines at the Curragh
Gossamer surges clear to win the Entenmanns Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh
Gossamer surged clear with a furlong to go
Gossamer bounced back to form in style to win the Entenmann's Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.

Luca Cumani's filly turned in a disappointing display to finish eighth in the English equivalent at Newmarket last month.

But she justified her status as 4-1 favourite as Jamie Spencer brought her home four and a half lengths clear.

  Irish 1,000 Guineas
1 Gossamer 4-1 Fav
2 Quarter Moon 9-2
3 Starbourne 20-1
4 Alstemeria 50-1
15 ran

Gossamer had been sent off 11-8 to win the Sagitta 1,000 Guineas but could never get near the leaders and finished a disappointing eighth behind Kazzia.

This time Spencer made no mistake when the daughter of Sadler's Wells cruised into contention a quarter of a mile from home as Starbourne took up the running.

Gossamer showed an impressive burst of speed to beat the staying-on Quarter Moon (9-2), the best of Aidan O'Brien's five runners.

Quarter Moon's stable companion Starbourne was a length further back in third.

John Gosden's French 1,000 Guineas winner Zenda flattered briefly in the straight but faded to finish last of the 15 runners.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Alasha could never land a blow and came home in 11th place.
