| Stylish Rock secures Guineas double Sir Alex Ferguson, Mick Kinane and Rock of Gibraltar Odds-on favourite Rock of Gibraltar added the Entenmann's Irish 2,000 Guineas to the English equivalent at The Curragh on Saturday. The colt, joint-owned by Sir Alex Ferguson, just held on at Newmarket earlier this month but he cruised to the most comprehenisve of victories in the Irish Classic. In doing so, the 4-7 favourite made history for Aidan O'Brien, who becomes the first trainer to win the English, Irish and French 2,000 Guineas in the same season. Just as last year, O'Brien horses filled the first three places, with Century City 1 lengths adrift and Della Francesca three lengths further back.
Nostradamus set the early pace with Century City the first to set sail for home in the mile-long contest, which was run on soft ground. Mick Kinane, who missed the Newmarket win through suspension, was content to let Rock of Gibraltar sit at the back of the field until inside the final furlong. And as soon as the Irish jockey asked his mount to accelerate, Rock of Gibraltar breezed to the front of the field with almost contemptuous ease. He is the first horse to complete the Newmarket-Curragh double since Rodrigo De Triano in 1992. O'Brien confirmed after the race that Rock of Gibraltar would be aimed at the Royal Ascot meeting. Proud owner "He has been left in the Derby but the plan is to go for the St James's Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot." Ferguson, whose Manchester United team ended the season without any silverware, was delighted to win his second Classic this year. "I never expected this - I have been very lucky and it is a great day." he said. "Aidan said they were going to hold him up for as long as possible and he showed a great change of pace to win - you couldn't be more impressed. "You do wonder over the winter whether a horse will train on but he definitely has, and hopefully he is still improving. I am very proud of him." |
