Birdie on song at Lingfield
Birdie (in red colours) edged out Barzah by half-a-length
Birdie (in red) edged out Barzah by half-a-length
Birdie was the surprise 16-1 winner of the Attheraces Oaks Trial at Lingfield.

Ridden by Richard Quinn, the three-year-old filly held off the challenge of 6-4 favourite Barzah to claim victory in the 1m 3f race by half-a-length.

Mubkera, ridden by Willie Supple, was third at 4-1.

The last 13 renewals of the Lingfield trial have produced four Oaks winners, the most recent being Ramruma in 1999.

But continuing the trend of recent Classic trials results, Birdie is not even entered in the Epsom Classic.

Longer trip

"We were going to go to Chester but I thought the ground would just be on the fast side for her," said her trainer Michael Bell.

Birdie had won a modest maiden at Newcastle in her first outing of the season but this had seemed a step up in class as well as in distance.

But the filly, who had contested the lead from two furlongs out, had battled on well when headed by Barzah and fought back for victory.

"The step up in trip has really helped her and she is a tough filly," said Bell.

"I honestly don't know where we'll go from here, I'm just thrilled she's done it."

Barzah will also be sidestepping Epsom despite a solid performance on only her second outing.

"She has run well and I am very happy with her," said trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

"She's a very honest and competitive filly, who has just found one too good.

"She won't be going for the Oaks now, maybe the Lancashire Oaks."
