Tony McCoy broke Sir Gordon Richards' record for the all-time record number of winners ridden in a season by triumphing in three of his five races at Warwick on Tuesday.

McCoy edged past Richards' target of 269 from 1947 by winning aboard Valfonic in the Leek Wooton Novices' Handicap Hurdle (1610).

After starting the afternoon on 267 winners, the Irishman rode 13/8 joint-favourite Shampooed to victory in the Hampton Magna Novices' Chase (1440).

Then after finishing third in his second outing of the day, McCoy steered Shepherds Rest to victory in the Barford Handicap Chase (1540) to equal the 55-year-old record.

The ever-modest jockey admitted that it was a relief to finally break the record after spending all year inching ever closer to the mark.

"I'm pleased to get it out of the way," said McCoy.

"I thought yesterday was going to be the day - in fact I thought last week was going to be the day!

"But I'm glad I did it on one of Martin Pipe's horses, I could not do it without him.

"He's a brilliant trainer, and I'm lucky to ride for him. He does not get the credit he deserves. I'm obviously delighted and I'm lucky to have so many supporters.

Pipe was quick to praise his stable jockey, with whom he has enjoed so much success in recent seasons.

He said: "Brilliant wasn't it? It's absolutely brilliant that he should beat Sir Gordon Richards' record and I'm thrilled to bits for him.

"I'm highly delighted he was on one of my horses. He deserves it, he's a dedicated, brilliant jockey.

"Only this morning he was down schooling my team of horses for the National over National fences that we built.

"Not only did he school his own ride but other people's too. He's a fabulous, generous team player."

McCoy will now set his sights on reaching the magical 300 mark.

Valfonic was McCoy's last winner of the day, as his final mount in the 1710, Sure Touch, was beaten into third by Kalasara and Kippur.
