Manx Telecom Vikings Hockey Club have achieved ClubsFirst accreditation by the England Hockey Board. The scheme recognises clubs for providing a safe, effective and child friendly hockey environment. Club secretary Debbie Shimmin told BBC Isle of Man: "We are absolutely delighted to have our hard work recognised in this way." The Douglas club is the third on the Island to achieve the standard this year, following Ramsey and Bacchas. All clubs achieving ClubsFirst are also awarded the Sport England Clubmark accreditation, a nationally recognised award for sports clubs. Hockey development officer for the Isle of Man Kerry Penswick added: "Vikings are doing an exceptional job and thoroughly deserve the recognition. "They have have done a lot of excellent work in schools this year, which is set to develop further in 2011." Vikings currently run development courses at both Scoill Vallajeelt and Ashley Hill schools to teach basic skills and techniques. Shimmin continued: "The response has been great in the primary schools and we hope to take our training programme into secondary schools in the new year." The Douglas club has over 150 members with a playing age ranging six to 65.
