England beat the Dutch in Germany

England kept alive their hopes of a medal at the men's Champions Trophy in Germany as they beat Holland 4-3 and then saw the hosts lose to Australia.

A win over New Zealand and the Dutch beating Germany in the last round-robin game would give England a medal chance.

Twice England led through Richard Alexander and Simon Mantell, only for Rogier Hofman, Jeroen Hertzberger and Mink van der Weeden to reply.

An own goal made it 3-3 before Nick Catlin set up James Tindall to win it.

Afterwards, England assistant coach Bobby Crutchley said they had done it the hard way, but he was thrilled with the result.

"Sometime's it's just about getting the win," he said.

"We were disappointed with the first half performance but credit to the players for picking themselves up. In the second half they fought hard for the win."

Speaking about Nick Catlin, who was involved in both England's second half goals, Crutchley said: "Nick upped his game in the second half and his contribution was rewarded."

With England having completed their part of the bargain, they then saw Germany crash 3-1 to Australia in a repeat of this year's World Cup final.

Martin Haner put the home side in front on 23 minutes from their first penalty corner, but five minutes before the break a blunder by German goalkeeper Max Weinhold allowed Desmond Abbott to equalise.

Abbott was on target again on 47 minutes when he flicked the ball into the net despite having is back to goal, and 10 minutes later James Dwyer's solo run resulted in Australia's third goal.

The Germans threw everything into attack, but Australia held on to claim their fourth win in a row and ensure a place in the final.

They play Spain in their last round-robin game on Saturday.
