Injured Richard Mantell 'may miss Commonwealth Games'

Richard Mantell is a doubt for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in India after picking up an injury at this month's hockey World Cup, in the same country.

The England star's operation on a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, sustained against Pakistan, "went well" according to England Hockey.

However, Mantell will be out for at least six months and may miss the Commonwealths, which start in October.

Mantell's brother, Simon, should make a quicker return from a foot injury.

BBC Sport understands Simon Mantell suffered a recurrence of an old foot injury during a training game against New Zealand while at the World Cup, but will not face such a lengthy lay-off.

In the absence of the Mantell brothers, England reached the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time in 24 years, but were unable to beat defending champions Germany.

The Germans now face Australia in the final in Delhi on Saturday, while England play the Netherlands for third place earlier in the same day.
