Mantell is flying home for further treatment on his injury
England's World Cup preparations have suffered a blow after Reading's Simon Mantell was ruled out because of a foot injury suffered in training.
The tournament starts in India on 28 February, with England's opening game against Australia that same day.
Mantell had only made it into the squad when Matt Daly was ruled out after tearing his hamstring at the pre-tournament training camp in Qatar.
Hampstead and Westminster defender Dan Fox will take Mantell's squad place.
The build-up to the tournament in Delhi has been overshadowed by safety fears after a bomb attack in the Indian city of Pune on 14 February, which claimed 15 victims.
There have also been alleged threats from groups targeting sporting events - naming cricket's Indian Premier League and the Commonwealth Games, as well as the World Cup, as potential targets - but the England Hockey Board has been taking advice from the authorities and still intends to travel to India.
England's opening opponents Australia lost 4-3 to Germany in the last World Cup final.
The other teams in Pool B are hosts India, Pakistan, South Africa and Spain.
