 The Dutch squad celebrate a sixth world title |
The Netherlands won the women's World Cup for the sixth time with a 3-1 victory over Australia in Madrid. Maartje Paumen opened the scoring early in the second half before Australia equalised through Rebecca Sanders.
Sylvia Karres put the Dutch back in front with her sixth goal of the tournament and Paumen made sure of victory three minutes from time.
Earlier, Argentina, who the beat the Dutch in the 2002 final, won the bronze medal when they beat hosts Spain 5-0.
"Our new players have fitted into the side after the last World Cup and they have improved so much that we have no weaknesses so we are now a complete team," said Dutch coach Marc Lammers.
"The win today is fantastic, Australia played well, and it was a great final."
