Budding gymnasts in West Cornwall received a boost on Saturday with Beth Tweddle opening a brand new training centre in Mullion.

The Mullion Gymnastics Centre will provide first-class training facilities for young people in the local area.

The centre was officially opened by Tweddle, the most successful British gymnast in history.

Tweddle was the first British gymnast to win medals at both the World and European Championships.

The 24-year-old won gold on the uneven bars at both events in 2006 and has also been crowned British National Champion seven times, winning the title every year between 2001 and 2007.

Tweddle missed out on a medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finishing fourth in the final of the uneven bars.

And the Liverpool-based gymnast told BBC Radio Cornwall she is determined to get a podium place at the London Olympics three years from now.

"I've decided to continue to London 2012, providing my body holds out and as long as I'm still enjoying it," Tweddle said.

"I'm just taking each day as it comes and working closely with my coach and my physio to keep my body going."
