The British visually impaired judo team put in a strong display to win five medals at the 2011 German Open. Ben Quilter and Darren Harris both won gold medals at the event for the third time in their careers. World champion Quilter won in the -60kg category while Harris triumphed in the -66kg category. Joe Ingram took silver in the -100kg competition while Lesley Reid won silver in her -70kg category and there was bronze for Daniel Powell (-81kg). The team are preparing for the European Championships, which will be held in Crawley in June. But Paralympic programme manager David Sanders was left frustrated by the lack of competition available to his athletes in Germany. "This year's German Open was not well attended and not of a particularly high standard, which is a shame when you are trying to put in strong performances ahead of major tournaments and after a good block of training," he said. "That said, our players did what they had to do and each of them gained more valuable experience to take back with them in their preparation for the major events later in the year and of course London 2012."
