Frederiksen was in fine form as she won a fifth European title |
Heather Frederiksen won her fifth gold as Great Britain claimed 14 medals on the penultimate day of the European Paralympic Swimming Championships. The Wigan star was in commanding form to win the women's S8 100m freestyle. Sascha Kindred, Stephanie Millward, Natalie Massey, Matthew Walker and Daniel Pepper also won gold medals. Kindred's victory in the S6 50m butterfly, in a new European record time, gave him his third title of the Championships in Reykjavik. Kindred, who powered through the pool and touched in a time of 32.28 seconds, said: "That was my third time that I have been on top of the podium at this Championships but that one was the sweetest. "I lowered my personal best and the European record which was the aim for that race." | The medals are what all of the training is for |
Britain secured all of the places on the podium in the S9 100m backstroke in a race that saw Millward win her fourth gold medal of the competition. Elizabeth Simpkin won her first silver of the competition and Frederiksen took bronze. "That gold for me was wonderful and to have all three of us on the podium and it makes us proud to be British," Millward said. Frederiksen was delighted with her medals, and particularly the victory in the freestyle. "That was a really good race," Frederiksen said. "I was pushed all of the way. I have had a heavy programme here and it has meant that I have had to work really hard. But the medals are what all of the training is for." The men's S14 100m freestyle saw Ben Procter and Pepper going head to head again as they went into the final ranked in first and second place respectively. Procter got off to the better start, but Pepper began to pull it back and through the final 25m Pepper managed to edge ahead of Procter. Natalie Massey won her first gold medal of the competition - and her first European title - in the women's S14 100m freestyle after showing her power with an excellent finish to the race. Walker also won gold in the men's S7 50m butterfly. Emma Cattle claimed silver in the women's S10 100m backstroke, Anthony Stephens won silver in the men's S5 100m freestyle, Lauren Hobbins won bronze in the women's S13 100m backstroke, and David Hill took bronze in the men's S9 100m backstroke.
