Great Britain booked their place in the European wheelchair basketball championships semi-finals with a convincing 77-61 defeat of Germany. Leading 35-27 at half-time, an unanswered run of 14 points in the fourth quarter proved crucial as Britain ran away with the game late on. Terry Bywater and Jon Pollock were the heroes for Murray Treseder's team, sharing 40 points and 28 rebounds. Britain now face host nation Turkey, who beat previously unbeaten Israel. In fact, in a night of upsets, two other seeded teams joined Israel in crashing out at the quarter-final stage, with Spain going down against Poland and Italy coming from behind to defeat France by two points in a thriller. | 606: DEBATE |
Britain face Turkey at 1900 local time (1700 BST) on Wednesday in front of what promises to be a capacity, partisan crowd. "I'm extremely pleased with the victory in what was a high standard, high quality game, as it usually is against the German outfit," said head coach Treseder. "The improved performance of Bywater was critical, particularly as Jon Hall and Ian Sagar had struggled early in the game. "I also must praise the unheralded performances of Simon Brown, Peter Finbow and Abdi Jama, who were instrumental in fulfilling their roles to enable the team to function at such a high level." This will be the second time that Britain have met Turkey in the championships, having met in the preliminary round with Britain winning 77 - 67.
