Frederiksen enjoyed a successful Paralympic debut in Beijing

Paralympic champion Heather Frederiksen powered her way to a new world record in the 100m freestyle at the ASA National 50m Championships.

The 23-year-old set a new mark in the S8 category of one minute, 6.55 seconds in Sheffield, beating Jessica Long's previous record of 1:06.92.

"I knew I was in pretty good form but I was really pleased with the swim," she said.

Frederiksen also broke the European record for the 200m individual medley.

The City of Salford swimmer, who won a gold, two silvers and a bronze in Beijing, clocked a time of 2:46.95 while there was also a European record for Claire Cashmore in the SM9 category.

Cashmore was pushed all the way by fellow SM9 swimmer Louise Watkin but pulled away on the breaststroke leg and touched first in a new record of 2:37.36.

"The time was a bit of a surprise really because I didn't really feel that fit," said the City of Leeds swimmer. "But when I saw I was ahead of Louise I thought this must be good.

"I knew I had 2:37 in the short course so I felt it was in me over the long course and in the end I was just trying to bring it home."

There was also a British record for SM14 swimmer Dan Pepper who edged out Ben Procter in a time of 2:19.70.

Pepper also claimed a British record in the 100m freestyle final after Procter had broken the previous best in the heats.
