Kenny recovers after setting the new mark in Copenhagen |
Paralympic cyclist Darren Kenny has described his new hour record as a "badge of honour" after he covered 40.516km in 60 minutes in Denmark. Kenny set a new mark for bikes without modern adaptation in the CP3 category for riders with cerebral palsy. "When I was younger it [the hour record] was an almost mystical thing, something that the top riders used to show they were the best," he said. "In cycling, it's a pretty exclusive club to be a part of." Kenny, 38 from Salisbury, was a keen rider as a youngster but suffered a neck injury during the Tour of Ireland aged 19. He won four golds and one silver at the Beijing Paralympics and established the new record during the Track Cycling World Cup event in Copenhagen on Saturday. Kenny already held the "absolute record" - using a bike with modern adaptations - of 41.817km. "It's nice to make it a matching set. I was really pleased to be so close to the absolute record too", he added.
