Coates is an experienced campaigner |
Shooter Di Coates will compete in her sixth Paralympics after being included in a four-strong team for this year's Games in Beijing. The Hampshire shooter made her Paralympic debut in Seoul in 1988 where she won gold in the standing air rifle competition. The 54-year-old has won three golds, a silver and a bronze during her career. She will be joined in Beijing by Paralympic debutants Nathan Milgate, Matt Skelhon and James Bevis. Places for the shooting competitions at the Paralympics were allocated based on the performances of British athletes at key international competitions throughout 2006 and 2007. Kent athlete Milgate, 21, said: "It is a great honour to be selected to compete in Beijing. It will be a whole new experience for me, being my first Paralympics. "The training over the next few months will be very hectic with camps for the whole squad, but it will be good preparation for the Games. The training schedule should put me in good stead for performing at my best and hopefully in the running for a medal." Great Britain national coach and performance manager, Colonel Pasan Kularatne said: "I am pleased with the progress and success of the whole GB disabled shooting squad to date. "The selection of these athletes is testament to their commitment and dedication and we are confident that they will do their best in Beijing. "Everyone involved with Disability Target Shooting Great Britain is looking forward to a successful Paralympic Games, not just for our shooters but for the GB team as a whole." Britain has enjoyed success in the past in the sport with Isabel Newstead, who passed away early last year following a long illness, winning three gold medals. The Paralympic shooting events take place at the Beijing Shooting Range Hall from 7-12 September.
