Roberts has been selected for the Beijing Paralympics |
Paralympian Dave Roberts added to his freestyle world record collection by taking the 200m mark at the German Open championships. Roberts, who competes in the S7 category, is now the world record holder over 50, 100, 200 and 400m. His time of 2:18.86 gave him third place in the final with the two swimmers ahead of him setting records in their respective categories. "This is the first time I have records in every event I swim in," he said. "It has taken me eight years to achieve this feat but now I have done it, it feels fantastic. "That race was good. I enjoyed it but where I am in my training cycle I shouldn't have gone that quickly so to get the record is a pleasant surprise. This is quite a lucky pool for me, I always seem to swim well here." Rising star Sam Hynd smashed the S8 200m freestyle mark in the morning heats with a time of 2:11.12 but he could only finish fourth in the final. "I held the 200m record before but as a split on the 400m freestyle, but I have never had it through an individual event," he said. "I was not feeling great in warm-up but I brought my performance out in the heats and got a good time. I was quite happy with my performance in the final but I know I could have gone faster." The women's 50m backstroke also yielded success for the British team with Heather Frederiksen (S8) and Stephanie Millward (S9) breaking European and world records respectively in the heats. Frederiksen, a former open water swimmer, twice lowered the European record, touching home in her heat in 38.04 before lowering it further to 37.53 seconds in the final to win the silver medal. Millward showed her strength in the heats to claim her world record in a time of 33.84 and she then finished fifth in the final. "In the final I just didn't have enough to go out and swim that fast again," she said. "I felt good through the first 30 metres but I just didn't have enough for a finish. "I need to get some more training under my belt and I will feel better for the months to come." There was a silver medal for Charlotte Henshaw in the 100m breaststroke while Eleanor Simmonds took gold in the 200m freestyle youth final where she was followed home by Louise Watkin.
