Alldis set a new personal best to raise his Beijing hopes |
Suffolk wheelchair athlete Brian Alldis has edged closer to a place at the Paralympic Games. The 21-year-old set a new personal best of 10 minutes 15.79 seconds, passing the qualifying time for the 5,000m at a meeting in Switzerland on Thursday. Alldis told BBC Radio Suffolk: "I was confident I'd reach the target of 10.19 but I was over the moon doing 10.15." The Bury St Edmunds racer must wait until June before finding out whether he has clinched his Beijing spot. Alldis's time gave him fourth place in the race behind Swiss duo Heinz Frei and Marcel Hug and Mexico's Aaron Gordian. He knows he has to raise the bar to be considered for the team but hopes this latest performance will help boost his selection hopes. "I'll be up against the likes of David Weir, Shelly Woods and all the top British athletes, but what I've always wanted is to get the qualifying time and at least have a chance of getting selected," he said.
