Weir set to compete in Manchester

London Marathon wheelchair race winner Dave Weir

London Marathon winner Dave Weir will head a Great Britain team of 30 athletes for the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester on 11 May.

The 28-year-old wheelchair racer will appear in the T54 400m and 1500m, both events where he holds the world record.

Shelly Woods, who was third in the women's race in London on Sunday, will compete in the 800m and 1500m.

Paralympic champion Stephen Miller will also be in action in the F32/51 club in which he holds the world record.

Among the other Britons taking part are talented sprinters Graeme Ballard and Katrina Hart, but Ian Jones will not have the chance to race South Africa's Oscar Pistorius in the T44 100m and 200m after Pistorius pulled out of the event.

World champion Bev Jones will take part in the F37 shot and discus while Daniel West and Nathan Stephens have both been entered in the seated shot putt event.

UK Athletics disability director Tim Jones said that the event at the Manchester Regional Arena will provide the team with a useful marker to judge their winter training and assess their form ahead of the Paralympics.

"While the focus of all of our athletes' attention is on performing at their best in China, this competition will provide an ideal opportunity to face up to some of our closest competitors," he said.

"The event this year will take on an added significance, being just four months prior to the start of Beijing Paralympics."

Organisers say a record number of almost 400 competitors from 45 countries will take part in this year's event, which also includes swimming, cycling and wheelchair basketball.

The competition, which is the biggest multi-sport event ahead of Beijing, begins on 7 May and there will be coverage on BBC Two on Sunday 11 May.
