Brown targets world archery joy
By Elizabeth Hudson

Brown will be chasing double gold success in Korea this week
Yorkshire archer Danielle Brown is hoping to continue her meteoric rise in the sport at IPC World Championships, starting on Friday in Korea.

Brown, who only started the sport four years ago, is hoping to secure a Paralympic spot in the compound event, where she is world number one.

"This is my first Paralympic world championship so I'm excited, but also nervous," she told BBC Sport.

"I never thought I would come this far in just four years."

Brown, 19, is the youngest member of a 17-strong Great Britain squad which also includes Athens Paralympic gold medallists John Cavanagh and Kathy Smith and defending world champions John Stubbs and Mel Clarke.

The University of Leicester law student suffers from a condition called RSD - reflex sympathetic dystrophy - which results in constant, chronic pain in her feet.

"I used to do lots of sports like fell running before my disability started and I took up archery because there was no running around involved," she explained.

"I now shoot propped on a stool so the weight is off my feet."

After winning a number of junior national titles, Brown was fast-tracked onto the Paralympics development squad and finished fourth in last year's European Championships, where she lost out to team-mate Mel Clarke for bronze.

The teenager has also competed in able-bodied events, including last year's world junior championships in Mexico, where she was beaten in the bronze medal play-off, and the World Cup in Dover at the end of July.

"What happens in Korea will be a very useful gauge of how far we've come and what we need to do to be successful at the Paralympic Games next year"

GB team manager Tim Hazell

She believes competing against able-bodied archers is helping her development as she chases a place in Beijing.

"The more competitions I do, the more I am improving and my scores are getting better. I find I perform better under pressure so I enjoy doing tournaments with more competition," she said.

"Since I made my senior debut in the Czech Republic last year I've learned such a lot. Every time I come back from an event I have something else to work on."

Brown warmed up for Korea with a team gold in the Arizona Cup in April and a gold medal and two world records in the individual and team events at the European Invitational Grand Prix at Stoke Mandeville in July.

The team gold was won with current world compound champion Mel Clarke and Pippa Britton, and Brown hopes the trio, who are also world record holders, can claim world success in Korea.

Brown will be competing against archers from 36 countries

"I really want to do my best because it's my first senior world championships and I would like to win a medal but I also want to enjoy the whole experience," Brown said.

"I know will learn a lot from it because I've not come up against too many of my rivals before and this is also my first time in Asia which will help me as I work towards Beijing, which is my main aim at the moment."

Team manager Tim Hazell believes the British team can make a big impact at the tournament, which will feature archers from 36 countries.

"This is a world championship, so it's a massive tournament but obviously we're all looking further down the road, to Beijing next year.

"What happens in Korea will be a very useful gauge of how far we've come and what we need to do to be successful at the Paralympic Games next year.

"We are going for medals in all classes in Korea with our ladies and gents compound teams having recently broken their respective world records.

"This coupled with previous Paralympic and world success from other team members are all positive signs for a good result."

GB team: John Cavanagh, John Stubbs, Fred Stevens, John Murray, Mick Beard, Alan Wood, Noel Parker, Michael Karaphillides, Pippa Britton, Mel Clarke, Danielle Brown, Kathy Smith, Kay Lucas, Lynne Burton, Kate Murray, Melissa Carter, Steve Prowse.
