Paralympian gold medalist Stephen Miller and his mother Ros have been crowned 2007 Newcastle Sports Personalities of the Year. Miller, who has three Paralympic gold medals, and Ros who is also his coach, accepted the award at a dinner at Newcastle's Civic Centre on Monday.
"It was a big surprise," said Stephen. "I just did not expect this at all.
"Without my mum I wouldn't have achieved anything. It was great to see her recognised for that."
Previous winners of the award include ex-Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer and Newcastle Falcons' England fly half Jonny Wilkinson.
The annual award ceremony also saw Newcastle United academy striker Andy Carroll pick up the Wor Jackie Trophy for outstanding young talent.
Young ice hockey star Jack Watkins was also a winner, collecting the Young Sports Star of the North East award after his impressive displays for England and the Newcastle Vipers youth teams.
