Mistry is competing in his seventh Australian Open |
British duo Jayant Mistry and Lucy Shuker both made winning starts at the Australian Wheelchair Tennis Open. Mistry put an injury-hit 2006 behind him to ease past Sweden's Niclas Larsson 6-2 6-0 in Melbourne.
The 40-year-old will face his doubles partner and Japanese world number four Satoshi Saida in the last 16.
Shuker beat Poland's Agnieszka Bartczak 1-6 6-4 6-2 and faces the Netherlands' world number three Sharon Walraven in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
Shuker, currently ranked 14th, will rise at least one place when next week's world rankings are announced.
Both Mistry and Shuker will begin their respective doubles campaigns on Wednesday.
Mistry and Saida, the third seeds for the men's doubles, will face the French pairing of Frederic Cattaneo and Frederic Cazeaudumec after having had a bye in the first round.
Meanwhile, Shuker will pair up with Australian wheelchair tennis legend Daniela di Toro for the women's doubles.
Former world number one Di Toro, who retired at the end of 2004, has come out of retirement to play at her home Grand Slam.
Shuker and Di Toro have a difficult opening match against Florence Gravellier of France and Korie Homan of the Netherlands, the world's number two and number five ranked players.
The event is the first of the four Super Series competitions on the tennis calendar, the equivalent of the Grand Slam.
