Lewis has enjoyed some good form in 2006 already

British swimmers claimed nine medals - including five golds - on the opening day of the IPC Swimming Championships in Durban on Saturday.

Paralympic champions Nyree Lewis (S6 100m backstroke), Jim Anderson (S2 50m freestyle) and Andrew Lindsay (S7 100m backstroke) were all victorious again.

There was also gold for Oxford swimmer Danielle Watts in the combined S1/S2 50m freestyle.

The 4x100m freestyle men's relay team finished the day on a high.

The team of Matt Walker, Graham Edmonds, David Roberts and Rob Welbourn repeated their Athens performance beating Australia to win gold in a new world record time of three minutes 58.20 seconds.

Lewis finished second to Chinese rival Fuying Jiang in the morning heats but turned the tables in the final of her number one event to finish in 1:28.99, leaving her delighted.

"It was really hard in there but I felt stronger tonight and after this morning I knew I had to step it up a gear," she said.

"I wasn't far off my world record and I would have liked to lower that in the final but at the end of the day, the result of the race is more important."

Anderson recovered from a slow start to claim victory in a race which saw all three medallists finish within half a second of each other.

Lindsay also put in a strong second half of his race to win in 1:15.31, a tenth of a second off his world best.

Watts, who is an S1 swimmer, was in superb form against less disabled S2 category athletes with a time of 1:21.17, which was just outside her best.

There were silvers in the S3 50m freestyle for both Scotland's Kenny Cairns and Colchester's Fran Williamson, who set a new British record of 1:03.16.

Luton teenager Claire Warne also managed a new British record on her way to bronze in the SM5 200m individual medley.

The 13-year-old beat her personal best by 15 seconds in her first major senior event.

Anthony Stephens also finished third in the S5 50m freestyle after he set a personal best in the morning heats.
