Weir won the London Marathon and three golds at the Paralympic World Cup |
Wheelchair racer David Weir continued his fine run of form by smashing the T54 400m and 200m world records in Switzerland on Thursday. London Marathon winner Weir became the first man in his category to break the 47-second barrier in the 400m.
The 26-year-old clocked 46.89 seconds at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial International Selection Meet in Ibach.
He then knocked 0.52 seconds off the 200m mark with a time of 24.49 before setting a UK 1500m record of 2:58.82.
Weir - who also claimed 100m, 200m and 1500m golds at the Paralympic World Cup earlier this month - will have to wait for his records to be officially ratified by the International Paralympic Committee.
His 400m time shattered the previous best of 47.05 set by South African Ernst van Dijk in 2001, while his 200m mark bettered Thai racer Supachai Koysub's six-year-old record of 25.01.
UK Athletics senior performance manager for disability Martin Colclough said: "Dave has been in magnificent shape this season and has been going from strength to strength in every event.
"This record certainly reflects the rich form he has shown in the Flora London Marathon, Visa Paralympic World Cup and last weekend's Great Manchester Run.
"It's an appropriate early birthday present for an exceptional athlete who is clearly on top form, and a massive boost to all the other athletes who will be competing alongside him at the IPC World Championships in Holland in September."
Meanwhile, the athletics meet in Switzerland saw several strong performances by Weir's compatriots. Shelly Woods clocked 3:31.42 to claim third place in the women's T54 1500m, along with fourth in the 800m.
Dame Tanni Grey Thompson won the T53 400m in 59.88 seconds before clinching first in the 100m with a time of 17.57.
