The Special Olympics flame will burn until the Games close on Saturday |
Owain Taylor claimed Great Britain's first gold medal at the 2005 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Japan by winning the intermediate giant slalom. The 19-year-old Londoner edged out team-mate Francis Muller to win.
It was Taylor's second medal of the Games - he had earlier taken bronze in the intermediate downhill.
There were also silvers for Katie Day in the advanced giant slalom, David Cottom in the intermediate downhill and Trevor Dundon in the novice downhill.
Cottom and Dundon added to their medal tallies with bronze medals in their giant slalom races. Kathryn Lumley won two bronzes in the advanced giant slalom and downhill, while Lissadell Lynch (intermediate downhill) and Mark Nethercott (intermediate giant slalom) also claimed bronzes.
The 11-strong team will be hoping for more medals in the slalom event later this week.
