Britain's Kay Forshaw in action at the Paralympic Games in Athens
British number one Kay Forshaw battled her way to a tremendous 6-4 7-6 win over Maike Smit in the second round of the women's Paralympic tennis singles.

The Briton played superbly in the first set, showing some lovely touches against the tough Dutch sixth seed.

Forshaw had a chance to serve out the match at 6-5 in the second but Smit broke back to force the tie-break.

Forshaw took a 4-2 lead before Smit rallied but the Briton held firm and emerged victorious in Athens.

"I had a close match with Maike last year and she beat me so it was great to get the better of her this time," said Forshaw, who had never beaten the Dutchwoman previously.

"I felt really comfortable out there and luckily enough I was able to take the opportunities that came my way and get ahead."

Forshaw, who is playing in her first Paralympics, will face second seed Daniela di Toro in the last eight.

Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and I'm happy to have got through
British men's number one
Jayant Mistry
British men's number one Jayant Mistry had a far tougher time reaching the last 16 in his event.

But the Leicestershire athlete eventually beat Austria's Herbert Baumgartner 6-7 7-5 6-1.

After losing the first set, Mistry trailed 4-2 in the second but got the benefit of a lucky line call to make it 4-4.

He eventually converted his second set point before dominating the decider.

"I think if it had gone to 5-3 in the second set it would have been a very big hill for me to climb," he revealed afterwards.

"I had to change my rackets in the second half because I just needed a mental change.

"Herbert was really causing me problems and was struggling, particularly with my forehand.

"Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good and I'm happy to have got through."

Mistry's next opponent is sixth seed Satoshi Saida from Japan, who beat the Leicester man in the third round of the Sydney Paralympics.
