Peddle suffers shock exit
Britain's defending powerlifting gold medallist Anthony Peddle made an early exit from the under 48kg competition at the Paralympic Games.

The 33-year-old had three attempts at 157.5kg but failed to record a single lift at the Nikaia Sports Hall.

Peddle had taken a shock victory in the event at Sydney four years ago, setting a new world record in the process.

The European champion could not deliver in Athens, however, as Iran's Morteza Dashti went on to take the gold medal.

Peddle went into the event the lightest he had ever weighed before a competition and after having major surgery.

"I tried my best and it wasn't to be," Peddle told BBC Sport.

"I suppose a few months ago if you'd said I would be competing at the Games I would have said 'absolutely no way.'"
