Andy Cassell is hoping to make it to another Paralympics |
Great Britain's leading disabled sailors are taking to the water in Athens over the next week with places in next summer's Paralympics at stake. The team, which is confident of success, is taking part in the World Disabled Championships in the Greek capital from Saturday.
The races will take place in the same bay as next year's Olympic races but conditions are set to test all of the participants, many of whom are chasing places at next summer's Games.
Two British crews take part in the three-person Sonar category with experienced Paralympian Andy Cassell hoping to be selected for another chance of Paralympic glory.
Cassell and his teammates Brian Harding and Ed Suckling are hoping to secure a place in Athens but they will face a tough challenge from the second crew, headed by John Robertson with only one spot at stake.
Cassell was one of the skipppers of a combined able-bodied/disabled crew in the recent Admirals Cup.
One place is also up for grabs in the 2.4 single-handed category with Andrew Millband, who has just competed in the open world championships in North Germany, the favourite for Athens.
But he will face stiff competition from four other British challengers, including 16-year-old Megan Pascoe.
"As well as the results from Athens, the selection panel will also take into account past results achieved by the crews," said George Barker, the coach of the 2.4 class.
"The weather here is very hot - much hotter than Athens normally is at this time of year but there isn't much wind which could make for tricky conditions."
