Cathy Davidson is a straight-hitting golfer on the Ireland team

There are high hopes that Ireland's straight-hitting Cathy Davidson can drive her way to a medal when the Special Olympics Games golf competition begins in Dublin.

The 25-year-old from Seeconnell in Co Down is the only Northern Ireland representative in the Irish golf squad.

Her uncle, coach and mentor Philip Patterson is confident that Cathy can spring a surprise, despite the fact that she has only played golf for two years.

''Cathy is a very steady golfer, and has improved since she started two years ago,'' said Patterson who is also coach to the Team Ireland squad.

''She doesn't hit the ball a long way, but she is very straight, and straight shooting usually scores very well. I believe her chances are very good indeed.

''Cathy first qualified through the Northern Ireland games, then was the only girl in the National Games in Dublin to qualify for the Games.

''The girls would travel to Dublin for either a two-day residential training or a one-day session. It's really to get them competing against each other, and to be part of a team.

''There is a club in Seeconnell and Cathy would practice for an hour before everyone else participates. This is where she has improved her skills.

''Now we are just hoping for some good weather.''
