The Great Britain women's wheelchair basketball face an anxious wait to hear whether they will be heading to the Athens Paralympics. The team qualified for next summer's Games by finishing third in the European Championships earlier this year but they must wait to see whether they will get the green light from the British Paralympic Association.
It leaves the squad, including key player Clare Strange, facing an difficult couple of months before they know for certain that they will be making the trip.
"It would take a huge weight off our minds if we knew we were definitely going to Athens," Strange admitted.
"It would mean we could just concentrate on working hard to being the best we could be - rather than working hard for the next year and then not go.
"Because we don't know when a decision will be made, we are in limbo and it is hard sometimes to focus on the ultimate goal."
If the financial issues were taken away, that would make a big difference to us GB international Clare Strange |
Despite their positive position in the sport, Clare admits funding is a constant problem for the GB women's team, who have just appointed a new coach in Dan McCaffrey.
"When I first got involved with the team I didn't realise how much fundraising had to be done to help the team train and travel and how difficult it would be.
"We don't get Lottery funding and although we get some exchequer funding, we still need to raise money. For example, to go the European Championships in Germany earlier this year we needed to raise 20,000.
"It is a constant battle to come up with fundraising ideas to keep the team together. We have a new full-time national manager in place which will help.
"The team does a lot which puts a lot of pressure on because if you raise the money you feel disappointed for the people who have helped if you don't do well," she said.
"However there is a lot of potential there and the right development could help us get the results in the long-term."
"We are obviously doing some things right so we need to go and work on some of the little things which will make big differences quickly."
