Former world champion Martin Adams eased into the second round of the BDO world championship with a 3-0 whitewash over Australian Anthony Fleet.

The third seed was gifted a comfortable route through by Fleet, who looked overawed throughout his first appearance at the Lakeside.

Northern Irishman Daryl Gurney will now face Adams in the second round after he edged out 14th seed Scott Mitchell 3-2.

Meanwhile, Garry Thompson beat Scottish sixth seed Ross Montgomery 3-2.

Thompson will take on Martin McCloskey in the second round after the Irishman beat 11th seed Steve West 3-2.

After barely being tested throughout the mismatch, Adams admitted he had felt sorry for his opponent.

"I never realised nerves could have that effect on a player," said the 2007 world champion, who did not lose a leg in the 28-minute encounter.

"I feel so sorry for him, he was so nervous.

"He's apologised profusely for not giving me a better game but that's what the Lakeside can do to you."

Fleet dropped his darts and looked unsteady on his feet at times as the occasion bewildered the Canberra man.

"I have waited 20 years to get here and I have embarrassed myself," Fleet lamented.
