Highlights - Wolfie bites back to win Lakeside thriller

England captain Martin Adams booked his place in the second round of the BDO World Championship after a nervy 3-2 win against unseeded Dave Chisnall.

Third seed Adams was leading the final set 2-1, but Lakeside debutant Chisnall hit back with a 180 to tie it at 2-2.

"Wolfie" Adams led 3-2 and 4-3 and the pair traded 180s before Adams won it.

Scotland's Ross Montgomery beat Martin Phillips 3-1, Northern Ireland's Daryl Gurney saw off Garry Thompson 3-1 and Martin Atkins beat Joey Ten Berge 3-2.

Cambridgeshire-based Adams, who won the BDO title in 2007, faced a tough challenge from Chisnall, who hails from St Helens.

Both players missed chances to forge a healthy lead as Chisnall pegged Adams back every time he went ahead - and with the scores at 2-2 in the final set, the pair now needed to win by two clear legs.

Eventually, the youngster faltered in the eighth leg and Adams hit a double 12 to triumph 5-3.

"(Double) tops was awful to me - I could not have bought the double tonight. That was a hard game but will give me confidence for the next round," Adams said.

"Dave is a good player who took the Isle of Man Open in the spring and has had a good inter-counties season. I got what I expected - a hard game."

Montgomery, nicknamed "The Boss", breezed through the first set before Welshman Phillips edged a closely-fought final leg of the second set to level the match.

Adams relieved to edge past Chisnall

A 156 checkout in the third set - the highest of the week so far - put Montgomery in line for a 3,000 prize, and he never looked back as he booked a second-round meeting with former champion Ted Hankey.

"I expected a tough game from Martin because he steady and deliberate and never gives up - he is relentless," Montgomery said.

"And the first round is always difficult, there is a lot of tension, so I will look forward to my next game when hopefully there will not be as much pressure."

Gurney, another World Championship debutant, kept his cool as Yorkshireman Thompson became the third seeded player to bow out at the first-round stage.

The 22-year-old will face Adams in round two.

Extensive coverage of the Lakeside World Darts Championships will feature on BBC TV and the BBC Sport website.
