The Dutchman, in his first appearance at Frimley Green, claimed a maximum 170 checkout in the first set on his way to carving out a 2-0 lead.

But Stompe hit back to level the scores only for Brantjes to win the decider.

In the first second-round match, number one seed Raymond van Barneveld secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Mike Veitch.

The three-time champion has already started thinking about another title.

"That's important for me and the people of the Netherlands. It's fantastic to be world champion, and it's good to be in the quarter-finals again," said van Barneveld.

"But I'm just taking it one round at a time, and treating every one of them as a final."

Brantjes was thrilled by his victory and after sealing the win, he broke down and started crying on stage.

"I'm a very emotional person and you can't change that but I enjoyed my debut," he said.

"We know each other very well and I feel for him because he's a good player. It's sad to lose a player like Co and it's not nice to play a fellow countryman but this is what the game is like, only one can survive."

Third seed King made it through to round two with a 3-0 victory over Wayne Warren.

King, a losing finalist in two of the last three years, saw off the Welsh qualifier in three tough sets.

King admitted he had been made to work hard by Warren, who took each set to a fifth and deciding leg.

"It was a very hard game. He scared the life out of me in the first set when he went 2-0 up but I dug in and I've come through," said King.

"It doesn't feel like a 3-0 win - it feels like I've just gone through a nine-setter and won 5-4."

Sixth-seeded Englishman Tony O'Shea was an early casualty as he lost 3-1 to Finland's Marco Kantele.

O'Shea was hampered by a dislocated left shoulder and Kantele took full advantage, winning six legs in a row after dropping the first set.

The Finn will now play Simon Whitlock in the second round after the Australian's dour 3-1 victory over fellow Lakeside debutant Tony Martin of England.
